Since Invisalign is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments, there’s a good chance that you already know quite a bit about it – from how transparent the aligners are to the fact that the average treatment timeline is only 12-18 months. If you want to learn about some of the less talked about aspects, however, then read on for a few things you should know before getting Invisalign. That way, your transition into life with braces is smooth and seamless!
1. Your Treatment Plan Might Include Attachments
Many think that “Invisalign” and “clear aligners” are synonymous. In reality, Invisalign treatments can include other orthodontic accessories, like attachments. These help give your trays something to grip onto, making it easier to address more moderate cases of malocclusion. Don’t worry though – they won’t draw any unwanted attention to your smile!
2. You May Need to Tweak Your Coffee Routine Slightly
If you love starting your morning with a cup of coffee, you’ll be happy to hear that you don’t have to give up this caffeinated beverage during your teeth-straightening journey with Invisalign. You will, however, need to take your aligners off first. That way, they don’t warp from the hot temperature or stain from the dark color.
3. Any Tightness You Experience Is Temporary
Immediately following your transition to a new set of aligners, it’s normal to experience some soreness. The good news is that it’s only temporary, and there are several things you can do to help alleviate your discomfort. That includes sticking to soft foods, taking OTC pain medication as directed, and transitioning to your new trays right before bed.
4. Wearing Your Aligners for 20+ Hours a Day Is Important
Compared to other orthodontic treatment options, Invisalign is considerably more flexible. That said, there are some rules that you need to follow, including wearing your aligners for 20-22 hours a day. If you don’t, then your teeth won’t move in accordance with your treatment plan, increasing your chances of significant delays.
5. The Aligners Can Turn Yellow
When you remove your aligners from the packaging, they will be completely clear and see-through. Of course, they will only stay that way if you take good care of them. So, you’ll need to adopt good habits, like rinsing them with clean, cool water each time you remove them and brushing them with a soft-bristled toothbrush after each meal.
